Chan SanSan (James River) Scenic Backway

Over 12,000 years ago glacial melt formed the James River Valley.When travelers descend to the valley, they can see the panorama of a winding river surrounded by tall grass prairie and wildflowers. This area is rich in Indian history, earthen mounds, early settlement and scenic beauty. Visitors have multiple opportunities for recreation and wildlife viewing along the byway.

South from Highway 46 through Adrian, Dickey, Grand Rapids and LaMoure to the intersection of the County Line Road.
Points of interest
- Heinrich-Martin Dam - Built in 1968, the Heinrich-Martin Dam offers visitors picnic shelters, a swimming area, great fishing, and the perfect spot to relax.
- Double Pony Truss Bridge – This rare Double Pony Truss Bridge was recently restored. An interpretive sign on the site offers a glimpse of early life in LaMoure County.
- Memorial Park Musicals – Each summer since 1972 the LaMoure County Memorial Park is filled with the sights and sounds of musical classics. For more information on times and dates call (701) 883-5230.
- LaMoure County Courthouse - This stately landmark dominates the beautiful view of the valley with a large domed roof that is impressive from any direction. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the story of how the courthouse came to be is as rich and interesting as any.
- Toy Farmers Museum - This museum is in a restored barn which was built in 1914 and houses display cases with many collectibles, including Lowell Davis' sculptured barns and farming scenes, among many other. For more information call 1-800-533-8293.
- Red Wing Paddleboat - Built in 1914 and used on the James River for a time, this paddleboat was restored in 1971 and now rests near the James River at LaMoure for the public to enjoy.
