What goes into operating and maintaining a state park?

The department manages 21,287 acres of land across the state of North Dakota. This land ranges from native landscape to fully developed state park properties, overseen by about 62 full-time employees and180 seasonal staff. The question we get asked a lot is what goes into operating and managing these properties. Below is just a snapshot of the infrastructure the department manages across our properties. Camper Profile

The way the department has collected camper information has transformed in the last five years. With updated technology, we are able to better understand our campers. Take some time below to explore where our customers are coming from, either system-wide or by your favorite location. Use the filters on the left-hand side to select the state park you are interested in viewing or select no parks to view it system-wide. The date range can also be changed to reflect a specific range.

Visitation

Our visitation numbers are tracked by vehicle counters placed at the entrance of our park locations. This information gives the department a nice historical picture of our visitor and also helps us capture an idea of our daily park use. The department was allocated funds in the previous legislative session to update our technology to capture this information. This project is currently underway.  Use the filters on the left-hand side to select the state park you are interested in viewing or select no parks to view it system-wide. The date range can also be changed to reflect a specific range.
