GROWING THE GORGE
The Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area is a place of rugged beauty and promise.
Our vision is to “Grow the Gorge”— to embark on a journey to provide the amenities that will help us ensure all generations have access to the beauty and benefits of a remarkable state park experience in this unique part of North Dakota.
With private financial support, North Dakota Parks and Recreation has an opportunity to leverage matching grant funds and continue a three-phased journey to make these enhancements a reality. This is your invitation to join us.
YOUR DOLLARS MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Input from multiple planning and survey efforts shows the increased demand for outdoor recreation and the desire for more camping opportunities in North Dakota. As an already sought-after destination with a well-established trail system, expanding the Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area to accommodate overnight stays and offer more amenities elevates the park to support healthy communities.
SUPPORT HEALTHY COMMUNITIES
Outdoor recreation is essential to North Dakota’s quality of life, improving the health and well-being of its citizens. According to our surveys conducted in 2021, camping was the top activity visitors participated in on their most recent visit to a state park and the second most requested offering community members would like to see more of, right behind trails.
GROW LOCAL & STATE ECONOMIES
Outdoor recreation also contributes significantly to the state’s economy as one of the primary drivers of tourism. In 2020, North Dakota state park visitation had a total economic contribution of $154 million and supported 1,850 jobs. A federal BEA study showed that outdoor recreation added $1.4 billion in economic value in 2021.
PHASED DEVELOPMENT PLAN
The Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area Development Project will be completed in three phases. Each phase is designed to add an upgraded level of service and amenities, which improves not only the region’s tourism and economic development, but impacts the entire state.
By adding overnight accommodations and destination property amenities, per-person visitor spending is expected to grow substantially. Visitor spending increased from $86 for single-day visitors to nearly $460 for multi-day visitors to the North Dakota state park system in 2020.
