    • Winter Challenge: January 1 – March 30. Kick off the 2026 Hiking Challenge by exploring the trails and keeping your eyes on the ground! Participants must hike and log at least three different trails (can be completed in one park or multiple parks). While out hiking, look for signs of wildlife and capture a photo of animal tracks you discover along the trail. Upload the photo to the social feed in the app when you “check-in” to the trail!
    • Spring Challenge: April 1 – June 30. Celebrate the return of spring by getting back on the trails! Participants must log at least 2 hikes in two different North Dakota State Parks (total of at least 4 hikes). While hiking, take and upload a photo of something green emerging—new leaves, grasses, buds, moss, flowers, or other signs of spring.  Upload the photo to the social feed in the app when you “check-in” to the trail!
    • Summer Challenge: July 1 – September 30. Make the most of long summer days by hitting the trail often! Participants must log at least six hikes between July 1 and September 30, 2026 (can be completed in one park or multiple parks). At least one hike must take place at sunrise or sunset, and participants must upload one photo capturing the sunrise or sunset from the trail.  Upload the photo to the social feed in the app when you “check-in” to the trail! Participants are welcome to upload additional photos of their other hikes, but it is not mandatory for this seasonal challenge.
    • Fall Challenge: October 1 – December 31. Close out the year by celebrating the stories, landmarks, and character that make our trails unforgettable. Participants must hike at least three different trails (can be completed in one park or multiple parks). During your hikes, take and upload a photo of something that makes the trail or area legendary into the app when you “check-in” to the trail—a striking overlook, historic feature, unique natural formation, iconic tree, or other memorable element.

Additional Information

There is no cost to participate in the yearly hiking challenge. However, entering any state park by vehicle requires the display of a North Dakota Parks & Recreation annual permit or a vehicle day pass. These permits are available to purchase at any state park visitor center/office (hours of operation may vary) or will be available for purchase online

The entire family is encouraged to participate in the seasonal challenges. However, only individuals who download and check-in through the app will qualify for prizes. Trail activities don’t necessarily need to be hiking. Biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or other trail activities can also be done. However, each trail has limitations on the usage of that trail. Refer to trail information online or in print for allowed usage.

Each season, those successfully completing a challenge will be entered into a prize drawing for one night of free weekday camping or for an annual vehicle pass (5 nights of camping and 5 annual passes will be drawn quarterly). Current employees of NDPRD or employees who were employed with NDPRD during a challenge timeframe are not eligible to be entered into the drawings.
