We're bringing you more outdoor fun in 2021 with the much anticipated return of the Adventure Challenge and a new statewide 12 Months–12 Hikes Challenge. Pick one or take on both challenges! If you're new to our state parks, this is the perfect way to start exploring the hidden gems in North Dakota. For our seasoned visitors, up your game by taking on the challenges and getting more out of your experiences! Plus, you'll have the chance to win prize packages including annual permits, free nights of camping and state park swag! 


12 Months–12 Hikes Challenge

Hike one North Dakota state park trail each month as part of the new statewide 12 Months-12 Hikes Challenge. Participants 18 years and older who complete 12 hikes by the end of the year earn a collectible 12 Months–12 Hikes medal. Ready to get active and stay healthy in our wide open spaces? Here's how it works:

  • Pick from 20 qualifying trails at 12 state parks, and get your hike in during the two-week time period each month. (We've created this checklist to help you keep track!)
  • Complete all your hikes in one park, or explore all 12 locations. The more parks you visit, the better your chance of winning one of our great prize packages.
  • Check-in is easy! Scan the trail sign QR code with your mobile device (using your phone's camera or QR reader app) and submit the online check-in form.
  • Miss a month? Watch for five bonus hikes throughout the year!

Official Rules

2021 12 Months-12 Hikes Challenge Official Rules

  • Participants must first register by completing the online registration form. Participants must be 18 or older and submit a completed online registration. Each participant must register a unique to them phone number, this 10-digit phone number will serve as the participant ID when checking in for each monthly hike.
  • If two or more individuals from the same household register use a different phone number for each registered individual from the household.
  • Registrations will be accepted from December 2020 through April of 2021. Not having completed any hikes from January thru April, participants would not be able to complete the 12 necessary hikes to complete the challenge.
  • Each month during 2021 there will be a designated two-week period to complete a qualifying hike. (See hike schedule.)
  • If you miss a month, there are five bonus periods (see hike schedule) where a participant can complete a qualifying hike to count toward their 12 hikes. Bonus periods may be a different length of time than the normal two-week period.
  • To confirm your monthly hike, participants must scan the trail sign QR code on a mobile device, enter monthly code word (found on the sign), participation ID (registered 10-digit phone number), number of hikers and then submit the participation check-in.
  • Check-ins will only be allowed during the designated two-week period or bonus periods.
  • Email submissions will not be accepted.
  • Only one qualifying hike submission per participation ID will be accepted and counted each two-week period or bonus period.
  • There are 20 qualifying trails statewide in 12 state parks that count towards completing the 12 hikes. (See list of trails) All qualifying trails can be hiked multiple times during the year to count as a monthly qualifying hike.
  • Trails will vary in distance, type of hike, type of path and how strenuous the trail is. On average, trail distance will be two to three miles. No special signage will be provided on the trails besides the trail head check-in sign indicating that the trail is a qualifying hike. Please refer to online information, park maps or inquire with park staff for questions. Trails may not be stroller friendly.

Additional Information

There is no cost to participate in the 2021 12 Months–12 Hikes Challenge. Entering any state park by vehicle by displaying your 2021 North Dakota State Parks Annual Permit or by purchasing a vehicle day pass. North Dakota State Park Annual Passes for 2021 are available for purchase online or at any state park visitor center (hours of operation may vary) 

The whole family is encouraged to participant in the monthly hikes. Leashed pets are also welcome. You must be at least 18 years of age, have a valid mailing address, phone number, and email to register for the challenge and to be eligible to receive any earned rewards. Prizes

All registered participants with 12 or more hikes completed by December 31, 2021 will receive the official 2021 North Dakota State Parks 12 Months–12 Hikes Challenge collectors’ medal. Additional prize packages include:

  1. Participants who complete the challenge and have a qualifying hike at three or more state parks will be entered in a random drawing to win one of six North Dakota State Park 2022 Annual Permits.

  2. Participants who complete the challenge and have a qualifying hike at seven or more state parks will be entered in a random drawing to win one package deal which includes a two-night stay in 2022* in a North Dakota State Park Yurt and a North Dakota State Park 2022 Annual Permit.

  3. Participants who complete the challenge and have a qualifying hike at 10 or more state parks will be entered in a random drawing to win one package deal which includes a two-night stay in 2022* in a North Dakota State Park full-service cabin, a North Dakota State Park 2022 Annual Permit and a North Dakota State Parks official outdoors gear pack valued at $100


Additional fees may apply for additional amenities.

Participants are allowed to win only one prize package.

Current employees of NDPRD, their families, or employees whom at any time during 2021 were employed with NDPRD are not eligible to win prize packages.

*Two-night stay based on availability, Sunday through Thursday, time of year, and with a reservation.

FAQs for 2021 12 Months-12 Hikes Challenge 

How do I participate in the 2021 12 Months-12 Hikes Challenge? 

  • Complete the 202112 Months-12 Hikes Challenge registration form here from Dec 2020 – April 2021. *If you do not complete a hike by the end of April 2021, you will not be able to achieve the 12 completed hikes in 2021.*  To make your monthly hike count toward your 12, you will need to check-in via a mobile smart device and hike a qualifying trail each month throughout the year. Bonus hike periods are on the schedule. Use these bonus hikes to cover a monthly hike you may have missed. 

Where do I find the qualifying trail to hike?  

  • There are 20 qualifying trails in 12 parks statewide that are part of the challenge. You can choose what trails you want to hike each month. Qualifying trails can be hiked multiple times during the calendar year and count toward your 12 collective hikes. A list of qualifying trails can be found above and are listed on a pinned post on the 2021 12 Months - 12 Hikes Challenge Facebook event page.  

Can I do my hike any time during the month? 

  • No. During each month there is a defined two-week hiking period. In order for hikes to count toward your 12, you must check-in and have hiked during the specified 2-week period. Bonus hiking periods will not be two weeks long and will vary depending on the bonus hike.  

Can I do more than one hike in a month and have it count towards my 12? 

  • No. You are only allowed to submit one qualifying hike for each two-week hiking period.  

What are the participating locations? 

  • Participating locations include Beaver Lake, Fort Abraham Lincoln, Icelandic, Fort Ransom, Turtle River, Lake Metigoshe, Lake Sakakawea, Grahams Island, Lewis & Clark, Cross Ranch and Fort Stevenson state parks. Additional locations include the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and Fort Mandan. 

Can I participate with other people? 

  • You can participate as an individual, a couple, with friends or with your family. Please note that all registered participants must check-in separately with different participation IDs (phone number). Completion medals are limited to one per registered participant.  

Can members of the same household participate separately? 

  • Yes, but each participant must be registered separately and use a unique individual phone number.  
     

What if we only have one phone number within the household? 

  • The phone number serves as each individual participant’s unique participation ID which is required as you check-in for your hike each month. If you only have one phone number for multiple participants, then add numeric value before the area code part of the phone number.

Is there an age requirement? 

  • All ages are welcome to participate in the hikes; however, to be a registered participant you need to be at least 18 years old.  

Can the same Participant ID (phone number) be utilized by multiple people? 

  • No, all participants must utilize their own unique participant ID for their trail check-in’s. Failure to do so will result in the hike not being counted 

Do I need to submit my trail check-in via scanning the QR code on the trail sign with my mobile smart device? 

  • Yes, this is the only way to check-in at a qualifying trail. If you have trouble with cell service at specific location, scan the QR code, save the URL location, and visit any of the state park visitor centers or entrance stations for free WIFI connections. Connect to WIFI and complete the check-in process. Or, submit your check-in form and monthly code word from the trail sign here. Remember this form will only be active during the two-week time period every month.

Do I have to do the trails in any particular order? 

  • No, You can choose to focus all 12 in 2021 hikes in one state park, or and can venture to as many state parks as you like.  

What if I didn’t find out about the challenge until after it started? 

  • No problem! Participants can register from Dec 2020 thru April 2021 on the 2021 for the 12 Months - 12 Hikes Challenge and still complete the challenge.

Are there any fees affiliated with the 2021 12 Months - 12 Hikes Challenge? 

  • Although there is no cost affiliated with the 2021 12 Months - 12 Hikes Challenge itself, fees may include state park entrance fees, camping fees and affiliated reservation fees and equipment rental fees. 

Is the 2021 12 Months - 12 Hikes Challenge COVID friendly? 

  • Yes! The 2021 12 Months-12 Hikes Challenge is a strictly outdoor activity that participants can participate in on their own.

Adventure Challenge

It's back! The much-loved Adventure Challenge is making a comeback in 2021. Everyone is invited to experience outdoor adventures within the North Dakota Parks and Recreation locations. Capture photos (and memories!) as you go and submit for a chance to win. We've created a 2021 Adventure Challenge Facebook page just for you – check it out now and follow along to participate.

2021 Adventure Challenge Official Rules

  • The 2021 Adventure Challenge officially begins at 12:00 a.m. on January 1, 2021 and ends at 11:59 p.m. on December 31, 2021; participants can start the challenge at any time within that time frame.
  • Participating locations include Beaver Lake, Fort Abraham Lincoln, Icelandic, Fort Ransom, Little Missouri, Turtle River, Lake Metigoshe, Lake Sakakawea, Grahams Island, Sully Creek, Lewis & Clark, Cross Ranch and Fort Stevenson state parks. Additional locations include the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, Fort Mandan, Crow Flies High State Recreation Area and the Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area.
  • Challenge is open to all visitors. Entrants or a family member must have a Facebook account that should follow the ND Parks & Rec 2021 Adventure Challenge Facebook page.
  • Adventure challenges are listed here and on a pinned post on the ND Parks & Rec 2021 Adventure Challenge Facebook page. Challenges can be completed in any order.
  • Participants must take pictures, proving challenges were accomplished. Pictures must be submitted via private message to the ND Parks & Rec 2021 Adventure Challenge Facebook page from a single account.
  • Limit one entry per household; entries must be submitted from a single Facebook account.
  • Bonus adventures will be posted periodically to the ND Parks & Rec 2021 Adventure Challenge Facebook page and will have deadlines for which they need to be completed.
  • Those completing bonus challenges posted on the ND Parks & Rec 2021 Adventure Challenge Facebook page need to complete the challenge and submit their pictures to prove their completion before the deadline. Failure to do so will result in no credit given towards that bonus challenge. 
  • All photos must be taken within one of the participating locations listed above; photos taken offsite will not satisfy completion of that specific adventure. Photos that are emailed, posted to the page or tagged referencing the challenge or account will not be accepted, nor count towards the overall challenge.
  • One photo per challenge; each photo submission must reference the challenge it is intended to fulfill. No single photo will count towards the completion of multiple challenges. Additional photos submitted pertaining to a completed challenge will not increase chances of winning. The North Dakota Parks & Recreation Department will assume copyrights affiliated with challenge entries, enabling them to be utilized in promotional materials and shared on social media.
  • Any questions, comments or concerns should be sent via private message to the ND Parks & Rec 2021 Adventure Challenge Facebook page. 
Prizes

We hope you enjoy traveling to these locations while making memories completing as many adventures as you can throughout the year. Upon the conclusion of the challenge, the first 100 participants who have completed the most adventures according to the official rules will win a North Dakota Parks & Recreation Department patch.

In addition, those who complete a minimum of 25 challenges listed on the pinned Facebook post and at least 12 of the Bonus Challenges throughout the year will get entered into a drawing for additional prize packages.

  1. One prize package will include a 2022 annual pass, two nights camping and a $100 voucher for North Dakota Parks & Recreation Department merchandise.
  2. Two additional packages will each include a 2022 annual pass and a $50 voucher for North Dakota Parks & Recreation Department merchandise.  

Winners will be announced and prizes will be awarded in January 2022 via the ND Parks & Rec 2021 Adventure Challenge Facebook page. Winners will also be contacted directly via private messaging via Facebook.

How do I participate in the ND Parks & Rec 2021 Adventure Challenge?

How do I find out what these challenges are?  

  • There are a variety of challenges that feature all participating North Dakota Parks & Recreation Department locations listed here and within the pinned post on the ND Parks & Rec 2021 Adventure Challenge Facebook page or on our website. In addition to those challenges, there will be additional bonus challenges posted on the Facebook page throughout the year. Bonus challenges will have a deadline and will vary in duration from a week to a couple of weeks. Challenges feature individual locations, a group of locations or may apply to all of the participating locations. 

Can I do more than one challenge in a day or at or at the same location? 

  • Yes, depending upon the challenge(s), you’ll be able to complete multiple challenges on the same day, whether it includes one or multiple locations.  

What are the participating locations?

Do I have to have a Facebook account? 

  • Yes! Facebook will be utilized to promote the challenge, list all of the challenges and for participants to submit photos via private message to serve as proof of completion for all challenges. Photos will not be accepted through other social media outlets, via email or by posting them to any of the department Facebook pages. 

Can I participate with other people? 

  • You can participate as an individual, a couple, with friends or with your family. Please note that all participants must submit their own selfies and that prizes are limited to one per household. 

Can members of the same household participate separately? 

  • Yes, assuming participants have their own Facebook pages. However, prizes are limited to one per household. 

Is there an age requirement? 

  • All ages are welcome to participate in the challenges; however, Facebook does require individuals to be at least 13 years old to have a Facebook page.  

Can I use the same photo to prove completion of multiple challenges? 

  • When photos are submitted via private message on the ND Parks & Rec 2021 Adventure Challenge Facebook page, participants are to indicate which specific challenge for which they want to prove completion. A single photos will not be utilized to prove completion for multiple challenges. 

Can the same photo be utilized by multiple people? 

  • All participants must utilize their own photos for their submissions. Failure to do so will result in no credit given for completion of affiliated challenges. 

Will my photos be shared and/or utilized elsewhere? 

  • We look forward to seeing you make memories while enjoying the outdoors at all of our locations! Your photo submissions may be shared during the challenge or in the future on social media outlets or via printed marketing materials. Although we do not guarantee that all photo submissions will be featured, we do look forward to sharing the memories our visitors are creating while visiting us! 

Do I need to take my pictures at the participating locations? 

  • Yes! 

Do I have to do the challenges in any particular order? 

  • You have the duration of 2021 to travel to the participating locations and complete the challenges on your own schedule and interests, in any particular order. However, participants do need to submit photos affiliated with the bonus challenges by provided deadline which will be stated within the bonus challenge posting. 

What if I didn’t find out about the challenge until after it started? 

  • Participants can start the ND Parks & Rec 2021 Adventure Challenge at any time throughout the year.  

Do I have to register? 

  • When you submit your first photo via private message to the ND Parks & Rec 2021 Adventure Challenge Facebook page, you will be asked to provide your mailing address and phone number to be affiliated with your submissions. That way, your contact information is available when it comes time to award prizes!
