Want to take the kids, grandkids or family camping but don’t know where to start? Don’t know how to keep the family engaged in the outdoors for a few days? Welcome to Family Camping 101, a half-day event designed for families to learn more about outdoor camping and recreation. This event is designed to be a safe, family-friendly environment for all participants to try new activities, outdoor skills, and meet other families! All family members are welcome (including infants and young children) to spend time outside together and develop skills to be able to continue to spend time together outside in the future.

All materials will be provided, just bring your family, appropriate clothing, and a can-do attitude! Register Online

The event will run from 1:00-5:00 pm (CST) at Lewis & Clark State Park, located approximately 20 miles east of Williston. Families will transition through several topics, including:

  • Setting up tents and other tips and tricks of tent camping.
  • Fire starting and outdoor cooking tips.
  • Tips and tricks to hiking with families; map reading and compass use.
  • Outdoor activities to keep the family engaged, entertained, and having fun.

All participants who complete the half-day event will be eligible to win a number of door prizes, including tents and other outdoor family fun items!

The event is free of charge, but does require registration. An annual or daily vehicle permit is required for park entrance and can be purchased online or at the park.
